The Long Tail Search And SEO
If you want your website to do well in the search engines then you will be looking at search engine optimisation (SEO). You may have heard of a term known as the ‘long tail search’ when you have been researching SEO. And if you want to get the best from SEO, then you should definitely try to understand what is meant by this term.
What is meant by a Long Tail Search?
Chris Anderson first brought the term ‘long tail search’ to our attention in one of his Wired articles. The article in question was referring to the fact that items which are not considered to be traditional ‘best sellers’ are still making a lot of money for places such as Amazon; the term long tail search was not referring to SEO in this instance. The words ‘long tail’ comes from the shape of a graph which is used to demonstrate how things are sold online. The peak of the graph covers the best sellers but after this peak the graph falls into a long tail. All along this tail are the items which are not as popular. The point that Anderson was making was that most of the sales are actually in the tail and not the peak. It proves that when it comes to selling items, business such as Amazon can make more profit from selling less popular items than the popular ones.
The idea has been transported to SEO to describe how people behave when searching on the web. A lot of items that are searched on the internet are done so with some popular keywords. And in a similar case to that of Amazon above, when it comes to searching for items most of the keywords that are used will not be the most popular ones but rather they will be the ones along the ‘long tail’. This means that anyone hoping to make their website as SEO friendly as possible will need to take into account these other keywords. For example if your website was selling sports shoes, it would pay to focus on other keywords and not just ‘sport shoes’.
